The Processional is my first extensive, non-class-assignment composition. It was written in the days between exam week and my college graduation in June, 1961. It was performed later that summer by the Westchester Pops Band at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, New York. It has gone through a number of revisions since then. One observant musician thought it typical of pieces written in the 1960's with quartal and quintal harmonies. The work is dedicated to the memory of my New Rochelle High School and Potsdam State Teachers College classmate Roberta Kantro Jamieson who died while attending college.
The instrumentation is piccolo, 4 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 b-flat clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 2 Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, 4 trumpets (1st doubling flugelhorn), 4 horns, 3 trombones, euphonium, tuba, double bass, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals and glockenspiel.
