There are three movements based on historic carols: 1. The London Waits ("Past Three O'Clock on a Cold, Frosty Morning"). 2. Huron Carol (Jesous Ahatonia) attributed to Jean de Brébeuf (1593-1649) and 3. Patapan (attributed to Bernard de la Monnoye (1641 - 1728). It was first performed under my direction at Cristmas concerts in Gray Chapel, Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio by the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra in 1998.
The instrumentation is 2 flutes, 3rd flute and piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, triangle, vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, "Big Ben" chime and strings. The English horn has prominent solos in the second movement.
