A short solo for tuba and piano in a somber, five-time mood.
A brief piece for flute and piano dedicated to the memory of loved ones. The piano part is easy. This work is only available in the downloadable format.
Composed for the now delveloping reed quintet consisting of oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone and bassoon. Three movements allow this effective ensemble to shine. The music is moderately difficult.
1. Iowa Prelude (0'25) An introductory fanfare, perhaps for the Iowa State Fair. It was originally composed in Iowa for the double-reed quartet OBOHIO.
2. Postcard: Manhattan Broadway, 1947 (2'26) Inspired by a color postcard showing Broadway in heavy traffic with buses, colorful signs and bustling sidewalks
A short work was composed for a group of high-school aged double reed players to rehearse with limited time and perform at a woodwind clinic. Rhythmically the parts use only quarter and eighth notes in cut time, but with a liberal scattering of rests within measures. The ranges are moderate for 2 oboes and 2 bassoons.
Chopsticks Varations is an hilarious setting of the famous piece for 2 oboes (or oboe & oboe d'amore), English horn and bassoon. It makes an excellent concert encore - especially if you've gone overboard with the "serious" stuff - and it is a proven hit at children's and senior citizen's programs. Parts are provided for all instruments and the score shows all instruments.
Music from the Ottawa River where rafts of lumber were floated to sawmills guided by men perched on the logs. The arrangement recalls the vibrant, outdoor life of the raftsmen in a setting for triple orchestral woodwinds. Performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at children’s concerts to demonstrate the woodwind instruments. It is dedicated to Victor Feldbrill. For Pic, 2Fl, 2Ob, EH, 2Cl, BCl, 2Bn, CBn
Composed to provide some practice in reading and playing sub-metrical rhythms: including 8ths, 16ths, triplet 8ths and a few triplet quarter notes. All rhythms appear on the beat and in syncopated form. The four parts swap soprano, alto, tenor and bass roles. The ranges are from low B-flat (B flat 2) to F above middle C (F4). The music follows a 16 measure blues progression throughout. Far from being a dull study piece, it presents a lively, "hot" result.

These fanfares were composed at different times for different ensembles. Fanfares 1 and 2 were written for OBOHIO to begin concerts by that double reed quartet. We played them offstage before entering. Tavern Fanfare was written for a wind octet to play a concert at, you guessed it, a tavern! The Seven Eight Fanfare was composed in 1998 for no particular ensemble or event.
One or more fanfares can be performed as encores, as concert openers, or as interludes between longer pieces. They don't have to be performed in numerical order.
