Weait - The London Waits for 2 Oboes & 2 Bassoons (1'42) PDF

First score page to "The London Waits" for 2 oboes & 2 bassoons.
SKU: [6010B - pdf]

I first arranged the melody for woodwind quintet in 1960. This version for 2 oboes and 2 bassoons is almost the same as that one. This anonymous tune appeared in “Apollo’s Banquet”, published in 1669. The “waits” were town musicians and the term also applied to street singers of Christmas carols. Sometimes specific tunes represented their towns, hence “The London Waits”. The melody is more recently known as a Christmas carol entitled “Past 3 O’Clock” on a Cold, Frosty Morning”.

Weait - Couplets for double reed quartet (1'00) PDF

First score page of Weait - Couplets for 4 double reeds
SKU: 1203-pdf

A short work was composed for a group of high-school aged double reed players to rehearse with limited time and perform at a woodwind clinic. Rhythmically the parts use only quarter and eighth notes in cut time, but with a liberal scattering of rests within measures. The ranges are moderate for 2 oboes and 2 bassoons.

First score page 1. My Lonely Heart from Weait - Two Canadian Folk Tunes for Nine Winds.
First score page to 2. The Jolly Raftsmen from Weait - Two Canadian Tunes for Nine Winds.
SKU: 7407 REV-pdf

These are arrangements of two melodies found in "Come 'A Singing Canadian Folk Songs" by Marius Barbeau, et al published in Ottawa by the King's Printer, 1974. 1. 'My Lonely Heart' was collected from Mme. Bolduc of Quebec City in 1918. 2. 'The Jolly Raftsmen' is a lumberman's song from the Ottawa River. This version of 'Jolly Raftsmen' is the first one I made. Later, I set it for 12 woodwinds as 'The Merry Raftsmen' [7905] and for woodwind quintet 'The Jolly Raftsmen' [9513]. The work is dedicated to my college room-mate, the Canadian composer and painter, Donald Coakley.

Weait - Fragments for wind octet (3'50) PDF

First score page of Weait Fragments for wind octet.
SKU: 9223-pdf

Fragments for wind octet was composed beginning in 1992 and worked on sporadically until 2010. It uses a compositional technique as if themes placed on a bulletin board are moved around for each instrument. The motives recall the traditional figures played when harmonies – ensembles of pairs of woodwinds and horns - were in vogue: leaping clarinet arpeggios, bouncy bassoon bass lines, sprightly rhythms and lyrical oboe melodies. The horns, however, play a corrupted version of ‘horn fifths’ throughout without sharing it.
